What Is a VIN Number, and Why Is It Important?
Every car has a vehicle identification number (VIN), with a unique code assigned to every vehicle. You might need to know your vehicle's VIN for a var...
Enter any car REGO or VIN and get your VIN Check Report with the official Australian Government PPSR (REVS) check.
Your VIN Check Report Includes:
The "PPSR Logo" is the trade mark of Australian Financial Security Authority (Commonwealth of Australia) and the "Powered by PPSR" brand is used under licence. The "Powered by PPSR" logo is not an endorsement of any service provided.
Performing a VIN check can quickly show if something is not standard, such as a different body type or model. A VIN number check can reveal many details of the history of the car in question — it is one way to make sure the vehicle you are buying is what you are being presented with. You will also know if the vehicle has been stolen, written off, or has finance owing against it. To avoid any fraud, you should get a VIN check whenever you plan on purchasing a car.
A VIN check report can show many elements and the history of the vehicle, including:
A VIN check also shows other details such as the make, model and colour of the vehicle. Sometimes these details may not match — but if the seller can provide paperwork to justify the differences, this is usually okay.
The VIN is a number made up of 17 characters and is unique to each vehicle. It is used to identify individual vehicles. A VIN uses numbers and letters, except for I, O and Q, as these are easily mistaken for other characters.
A VIN number is different from a registration plate number. Unlike a REGO, the VIN of a vehicle cannot be changed — it stays with the vehicle for life and is used to properly identify it. Usually the REGO and VIN are linked, however this is not always the case. So if you have done a REGO check before purchasing a car, it does not mean you don't need a VIN check.
