A PPSR check can tell you whether money is still owed on the vehicle. If you buy a car with a loan against it, you may become responsible for paying off the debt. Around 14% of Australians have a car loan as of March 2021, equivalent to 2.7 million people. Make sure you protect your assets with a PPSR check.
Getting a PPSR check is very simple. All you need is the VIN number or rego number to find out if there is finance owing on your vehicle. Enter the number into Carify's search engine to get a full vehicle history report, including a PPSR search.
When you have the report, it's important to read it thoroughly. Then, make a decision based on what you see. If the car has finance still owing on it, you might want to negotiate this with the current owner to purchase the vehicle for less so you can pay off the debt. Alternatively, you might want to look elsewhere if there is a lot of debt on the car.
The Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) is for more than just cars. It governs a variety of goods, but it's often used for vehicles because people take out loans against them frequently. Any time someone purchases a vehicle, it goes down on the PPSR to keep track of who has an interest in it. In other words, if there is a lender involved or if the buyer owns it outright.
The PPSR is a government-owned register to keep track of personal properties and company assets with security interests. Because it is a federal register, it is secure and legitimate.
